Insurance
for Camera Equipment

Here for those Oh No! Moments

  • Cameras are easy to break

Constantly clicking? Cameras take a hell of a bashing to get the perfect pic.
  • They're attractive to thieves

Don't assume you'll never have your Nikon nicked.
  • Lenses get smashed and cracked

Popping lenses on and off can lead to some cracking shots. Literally.
  • They're expensive to replace

The feeling you'll get when you have to replace a DSLR or GoPro. A sickener, for sure.

Why use Protect Your Gadget?

While many of us rely on our good old smartphones to detail our life through pictures, there are also some seriously committed photographers out there. And whether you are a very keen amateur photographer, or you make a living taking photos, it’s likely your camera is very much a part of you.

If you’ve invested in a decent camera to capture those all-important family moments – from sports day to the Nativity concert to grandad belly-flopping into the pool on hols – you’ll be only too aware that cameras often go on all those adventurous trips with you – and that can be risky business. Snow, sand, rain, heavy-handed kids, rollercoasters… if you’re having fun and you like to use your camera to record the events, you might just want to take out camera insurance.

Protect Your Gadget’s camera insurance will help protect your camera (including DSLR and SLR cameras, camcorders or GoPros) against damage or mechanical breakdown. It covers you if you take your camera abroad and accessory cover is also standard.

Common Questions

  • 1.Why should I insure my camera?

Well, let’s face it. Cameras have lots of little buttons and functions. And lots of clicking and button-pushing can result in damage. Lenses get smashed and cracked and popping lenses on and off can lead to some cracking shots, quite literally.

Whether you have a Nikon, a Canon, a Sony or an Olympus, cameras are also prime targets for thieves. They’re also expensive to replace. Cameras, camcorders and GoPros are seriously sophisticated these days with features lie built in WiFi, special zoom lenses and underwater functionality, in a bid to get that perfect shot.

Doesn’t it make sense to insure your camera for a small sum each month or annually than have to fork out for a new one should the worst happen?

Protect Your Gadget has the right kind of cover for you and your camera or video camera equipment, regardless of where and what you are photographing or filming.

  • 2.What does camera insurance cover?

If you decide to buy insurance for your camera, there are three levels of cover you can chose from:

Protect: Accidental Damage, Mechanical Breakdown, £250 accessory cover, 60 days worldwide cover (per trip)

Protect Plus: Accidental Damage, Mechanical Breakdown, Theft, £250 Accessory cover, 90 days worldwide cover (per trip),

Protect Premium: Accidental Damage, Mechanical Breakdown, Theft, Loss, £250 Accessory Cover, 120 Days worldwide cover (per trip).

Cover is available to safeguard your camera as one item of significant value or you can opt for a household bundle policy which covers a range of items.

Protect Your Gadget offers a multi-gadget policy which could include your camera and all the other gadgets you own, likes Kindles, smartphones and iPads.

  • 3.What is multi-gadget insurance?

Multi-device insurance provides cover for multiple specified gadgets, including cameras. The gadgets can be owned or used by just yourself or immediate family members - at home or away.

Multi-gadget policies are ideal for families with children who use their gadgets on school trips, or where the children are students living away from home.

  • 4.How many gadgets are covered with multi-gadget insurance?

If you want to insure your camera under the multi-gadget insurance from Protect Your Gadget, you can but the maximum number of gadgets permitted on a policy is 10.

  • 5.Is my camera covered for overseas travel?

No-one with a love for photography is going to want to go on holiday without their camera so our insurance allows you to do just that.

With our worldwide cover, you can go abroad as many times as you want in a year as long as you return to the UK between trips.

Our three levels of cover allow for:

Protect: 60 days worldwide cover (per trip)

Protect Plus: 90 days worldwide cover (per trip)

Protect Premium: 120 Days worldwide cover (per trip).

  • 6.Do I need camera insurance if it’s still under warranty?

Cameras come with varying warranties under the manufacturer as standard but it’s unlikely you will be covered for accidental damage or - most importantly - theft. Extended warranties also don't tend to provide for such eventualities either. Protect Your Gadget insurance covers mechanical breakdown as standard.

  • 7.Is my camera covered under my home and contents insurance?

You don't want to spend money unnecessarily if you already have your camera covered, so check out your home contents policy to find out if they are protected. The important point to note is that while it may indeed be covered, it may not be covered outside the home or in the hands of younger family members. It probably won't be covered for mechanical breakdowns and malfunctions either.

If you claim on your home and contents insurance, it’s likely you’ll have to pay an excess and your premiums could increase. Making a claim can also affect your No Claims Bonus so purchasing a separate policy to protect your camera is a big consideration.

  • 8.Who can take out gadget insurance?

You must be a UK resident aged 18 years or over to take out a gadget insurance policy through Protect Your Gadget. Camera owners under the age of 18, that live in the same household as the policy holder, will need a parent or other carer to purchase a policy on their behalf.
